Target Audience for the PhD

The typical learner is between the ages of 30-65, being fully employed at the managerial or higher levels. Our learners have a thirst for knowledge and real-world experiences that enhances their skills for the current business environment. They understand that many theories fail to consider the current complexities of the world and desire thought leadership within their field. Through the learning journey, they expect to obtain the skills needed to create new theories that make a sustainable difference.

Structure of the PhD programme

Since we have an ongoing enrollment designed to meet the needs of our learners, modules are not trapped in a formal academic calendar.  Once we have sufficient numbers for a cohort of learners, a new module would start. The seven modules are taught consecutively with eight weeks for each module. 

The distance learning modality offers even further flexibility with individualized structure. Learners can progress at the pace they design, while balancing work and life. 

PhD Modules -Brief Description

RES801: Introduction to Social Science Research and Quantitative Methods (ECTS Credit: 8)

This module introduces learners to the field of social science research. As the first research module, it introduces specific requirements of scholarly research and authoring. The module then examines in depth the research process and introduces learners to the various aspects of doing scientific research with a specific focus on quantitative methodology, providing practical advice and insight in the field of business.

RES802: Qualitative Research Methods (ECTS Credit: 8)
This module introduces you to the field of qualitative research - non-statistical social science research. It examines in depth the research process and introduces future scholars to the various aspects of doing scientific research, providing practical advice and insight in the field of business.
RES803: Grounded Theory Research (ECTS Credit: 8)
This module introduces the qualitative approach of grounded theory research. It provides foundational knowledge to build credible theories within a dynamic environment. These are the foundational concepts needed before planning, coding, analysis, and theory construction, which is the process of theory building from qualitative data.
DOC820: Organizational Culture, Change, and Leadership (ECTS Credit: 8)
This module begins to explore the dynamic nature of organizational culture, the rapid change in globalization and the leadership skills necessary for success. This module also explores how business organizations take on unique cultures that influences decision-making, operations, strategy, and marketing.
DOC821: Mastering Epistemology (ECTS Credit: 8)
This module introduces the philosophy of knowledge which guides learners with a deeper understanding of the complexity of knowledge. A strong foundation for PhD learners start with an understanding of individual philosophies that relate to definition, purpose, acquisition and application of knowledge.
DOC822: Application of Systems Thinking (ECTS Credit: 8)
This module introduces learners to better understand the complexity of organizations through the application of systems thinking. This theory conceptualizes the interrelationships of all aspects of organizational life and focuses on the salient aspects that influence today’s organizations.
DOC823: Emotional Intelligence and Ethics (ECTS Credit: 8)
This module initiates an exploration into the mindset and psychological framework of successful leaders in conventional organizations. With a focus on emotional intelligence (EQ) to maximize ethical behaviours, the module challenges learners to explore oneself while creating a foundation for the development of emotional intelligence as a systemic intervention within an organization.
RES850: Dissertation Research (ECTS Credit: 124)
The dissertation research is the final module of study in the PhD programme. It is a culmination of all that was learned within the programme focused on a specific topic. This study combines the rigors of academic research with critical reflection of existing theories, especially considering the dynamic world of business. 

Teaching, Learning, And Assessment Procedures

Our student-centered approach is unlike any other you have ever experienced. This education is designed to develop the full person, not just the academic aspect.

Student-centered Teaching

Our teaching approach applies principles within constructivism and educational psychology:

  • Face-to-face modality: Each faculty will have a classroom observation by a supervisor/peer annually to ensure the student-centered approach is being applied within the classroom.
  • Online modality: Each faculty with more than three students will have an online classroom audit by a supervisor/peer annually to ensure the student-centered approach is being applied within the online environment.

 Learning & Assessment Procedures

Intended learning outcomes for the course and modules are assessed using various methods, including, but not limited to, the assessment of papers, discussions, presentations, and examinations. For each module, the learning and assessment will include discussion forums, in-class participation (for face-to-face only), essays and papers, and a module project. More importantly, you will be involved in critically examining the challenges you face within your organization and the business environment while going through the program.

Structure of the PhD in Business

The PhD in Business course (MQF/EQF Level:  8 with 180 ECTS) offers profound transformation as a critical and systemic thought leader scholar. The program takes place over a period of approximately 48 months, with 8 Residencies (one for each module), plus the Oral Defense of your dissertation and Graduation Ceremony, held at the various campuses across the world. The first 5 modules are conducted during the first year of the course. During the second year, learners complete their remaining modules and begin the journey of doctoral research. This research is an extensive and in-depth exploration of theories and practices.  Each module includes a four-day day-long residency (Thursday through Sunday). These residencies are highly intensive face-to-face learning experiences occurring within the classroom setting. Learners will have readings and preparation before each residency as well as post-residency assignments including, but not limited to, term papers, teamwork projects, and research projects. The residency weekend will occur on the 4th week of the term.

Using a groundbreaking curriculum design, Transcontinental Institution of Higher Education integrates systems thinking, emotional intelligence and technology throughout the course unlike any other program in the world. All modules are taught by global experts with renowned recognition and practical experience. Each module extends well beyond traditional theories in addressing the many challenges facing today’s business environment within a local and global context.

The following is an approximate schedule over the 48 months of study, which occurs in two parts that overlap. The first is the module sequence, which is is fixed – which is 7 module terms. The second is the dissertation research, which is 12 research terms for a total of 180 ECTS credits. The schedule for dissertation research may vary depending on the topic, resources, and other factors. All items in with Dissertation Research in the title is an approximate schedule.

As a new program, we do not have any data to present. With our unique learner-centered approach to developing the full individual, we expect the pass rate to be well above 90%.

Admission Process

Prospective TI students apply by submitting a completed TI Application Form. A completed application also includes each of the items listed below, submitted to TI:

  1. Master degree from an accredited institution (MQF/EQF L7 degree)
    • A full MQF/EQF L7 degree plus a portfolio evidencing relevant work experience for at least 5 years
  2. Portfolio evidencing 4 years of relevant managerial/ professional experience or academic experience
  3. Personal Essay – including personal passions, values, and vision
  1. If English is a second language, 7.0 IELTS total band score is required.
  2. Three letters of recommendation
  3. Completed master thesis or equivalent

Once an application is considered complete and the applicant is considered qualified, the prospective learner will be sent an acceptance letter delivered via email, along with an invitation for an individual meeting with one of TI's learner achievement advisors. This meeting, designed to ensure the applicant has made an informed decision, will be scheduled as a one-hour discussion using viable technology such as Skype.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria

Entry requirements for the PhD course are as follows:

  1. Master degree from an accredited institution (MQF/EQF L7 degree)
    • A full MQF/EQF L7 degree plus a portfolio evidencing relevant work experience for at least 5 years
    • A GPA of 3.5 or higher
  2. Minimum 4 years of relevant managerial/ professional experience or 4 years of academic experience
  3. Ability to comprehensively communicate in properly written English including writing and analytical skills to ensure that the prospective candidate can fully and meaningfully participate in course work including scholarly writing. If English is a second language, 7.0 IELTS total band score is required.
  4. Alignment between TI values and learner values
  5. Three letters of recommendation
  6. Proven capacity to research such as past research publications or master thesis
